How would you explain your job to an alien?

This would depend on the alien’s knowledge of academic consultancy. I help connect the knowledge and expertise of a university with the outside world. Academics often have incredible insights, but they need a bridge to apply these in real-world challenges and to translate academic language to commercial.

What did you do before EI?

I had hair! And worked in recruitment on accountancy and finance roles with Big4 firms.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The variety and exposure to groundbreaking and exciting innovations. One day I might be working on a vaccine project, the next on biodiversity, and the next on formulations. It’s stimulating to cover such a wide range of disciplines and to see the impact the University can have outside academia.

What's your favourite project that you’ve worked on? What did it accomplish?

It would be too hard to say just one but helping a large pharma company with their Covid19 vaccine during the pandemic felt impactful. Another key project was a biodiversity action plan to support sustainable marine life on the west coast of Africa.

What does innovation mean to you?

This word is at risk of being overused as much as sustainability but innovation to me is something truly unique or at least truly unique in it’s new proposed application.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of progress.” I can be a perfectionist, but I’ve learned that getting something moving often matters more than refining it endlessly.

If you had one more hour in the day how would you spend it?

On the golf course.

Do you ever imagine yourself in another occupation? If so, which one and why?

Often as a professional golfer although that's highly unlikely. Not only do they get paid to play the courses they often play them in their absolute best condition.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?

That outside of work, I own a small number of rental properties and am actively working on building a portfolio. It’s quite a different challenge from my day job, but one that taps into my interest in business and investment.

What would you really like to work on at EI/UoE?

I’d like to work on developing a more joined-up consultancy model—something that makes better use of the breadth of expertise across the University and allows us to be more proactive in winning new business. There’s so much untapped potential if we can collaborate across schools.
