Pioneers in the AI healthcare space, University of Edinburgh spinout Blackford Analysis is tapping into the potential of AI to enhance clinical practices and usher in a new era of patient care. The medical imaging field is constantly evolving, with frequent introductions of AI algorithms and machine learning applications. These technologies can identify structures and patterns that may be too complex or subtle for humans to recognise, and serve radiologists by boosting productivity, clinical confidence, and the decision-making process. However, the rapid development of these tools places the burden of testing and evaluation on healthcare providers, a process that is both expensive and time-consuming. It exposes the need for a more efficient means of testing that allows for the safe implementation and integration of cutting-edge clinical applications at an accelerated rate. This is what Blackford have achieved. A platform for success Blackford Analysis provides a single platform to quickly access and manage a curated marketplace of regulatory-approved medical image analysis applications and AI algorithms that add clinical value. After initially developing its own offering, the company has become a leading platform and solutions provider to hospitals and healthcare settings, helping them to navigate the AI market without bias to identify and tailor solutions that best fit their needs. Easily integrated into existing workflows, the Blackford Platform aggregates a selection of medical imaging analysis products, providing actionable information that allows healthcare providers to use imaging data smartly and reduce the cost of care while improving diagnostic confidence and patient outcomes. Results and reports are delivered seamlessly to where they are needed in existing systems. L-R Conrad Chin, Ben Panter and Scott Rutherford of Blackford Analysis. Supported to flourish and thrive Blackford Analysis spun out from the University’s School of Physics and Astronomy in 2010. Edinburgh Innovations has supported Blackford and its academic founder and CEO Dr Ben Panter from the initial company setup and license through its subsequent growth from a company of just three to well over 100 today. Old College Capital (OCC), the University’s in-house investment fund, has been a supportive and active investor, investing six times alongside lead investor Archangels. After initially collaborating on a development and license agreement in 2020, Blackford announced its arms-length acquisition by global life sciences company Bayer in 2023. Since the acquisition, Blackford remains headquartered in Edinburgh and continues to nurture its distinctive entrepreneurial culture as it expands into the USA and the Asia-Pacific. With its innovative platform, Blackford has successfully taken its research out of the lab and put it to work for healthcare professionals, imaging centres, and technology providers to deliver real impact for patients worldwide.
